A recent Southwest Airlines flight to Hawaii surprised its passengers with an onboard ukulele lesson. This was the world’s first ukulele class conducted on an airplane. The airline gave passengers ukuleles and ran a 20-minute tutorial in partnership with Guitar Center Lessons.
The flight was en route from California to Hawaii. After boarding the plane, the airmen found ukuleles on their seats. The airline also shared a picture of it on its Twitter handle.

Southwest Airlines conducts in-flight ukulele classes with lessons at the guitar center
Air travel is usually monotonous. Within a flight, you must maintain a certain level of etiquette. Even when speaking, you have to keep your voice extremely low to maintain the decency of the atmosphere. In addition, most flights have no internet connection. So unless you’ve downloaded a good book or movie to your phone, there’s literally nothing you need to do except watch the sky and the flight crew members pacing up and down the aisle.
However, the passengers on the Southwest Airlines flight did not have to deal with this boredom as they were accompanied by music. They had a merry time and enjoyed the ukulele session. As the airline updated, they were all professionals when the flight reached Honolulu.

The internet had mixed reactions to the move
Music lovers on board appreciated the flight’s initiative to entertain its passengers. However, a lot of people online didn’t seem happy with the move. Responding to the airline’s tweet, one user said, “Sounds like a really, really awful surprise. I am autistic and sensitive to noise. Being trapped on a plane full of people trying to play the ukulele for the first time would be an absolute nightmare for me.” Another wrote, “Oh wow. I would have immediately said ‘no’ and asked for a refund for the mental anguish.”
However, the airline responded to the replies, stating that the flyers were having a good time.
That sounds like a really, really awful surprise. I am autistic and sensitive to noise. Being trapped on a plane full of people trying to play the ukulele for the first time would be an absolute nightmare for me.
