Prince Harry may not be next in line, but my God, he is the king of oversharing.
As each new excerpt is revealed from his upcoming memoir, “Spare” — so be it quarrel with his balding brother Williamhis frozen penis or the time he slept with an older woman who “kept [him] Like young stallion” – The Internet is on the ball.
In fact, Twitter users have taken it upon themselves to remix some of the stories the Duke of Sussex shared, making the press tour even more entertaining. Culture writer Hanna Phifer, who made a brief appearance as BBC News, decided to create a few hilarious tweets showcasing Harry’s “revelations”.
One tweet read: “In his forthcoming memoir, Prince Harry writes of seeing Meghan in the bonnet for the first time. “From that moment on, I knew I wanted to protect her the way satin protects her afro.” Another tweet suggested hit series “Girlfriends”, while one poked fun at Tyler Perry’s Madea character. (Let’s not forget that Perry is Lilibet’s godfather.)
The aforementioned tweet alone had more than 30,000 likes, leading many users to believe that Phifer let these stories sit in his drafts for weeks, plotting the right moment to hit the send button. The 27-year-old author told HuffPost, “I’m not as laid back as people probably think I am.”
However, this is not his first time appearing on a bird app. he once changed his profile picture and Twitter handle to resemble a popular account Movie Updates.
“I just randomly feel bored and change my screen name and icon to something like a gossip blog and post a series of fake news tweets,” she said. “This time it was basically the same thing. I mean, some of the things that are actually in his book are way more ridiculous than anything I tweeted myself. It was so funny to see people trying to parse what was true.”
Phifer said that @writtenbyhanna is technically her professional Twitter account, but thankfully she has remained unscathed by policies that prohibit parody accounts or impersonators.
“There’s two people working on Twitter now. Nobody’s paying attention to me,” he said with a laugh. However, not everyone is so lucky; actor and comedian Jaboukie Young-Whitefor example, He has been suspended several times and has lost a certified blue check, most notably for posing as the FBI.
In addition to revealing the urgent need for media literacy in this country, Phifer’s hit tweets have more than anything else inspired other iterations from other black Twitter users.
Content Producer and Therapist Shahem Mclaurin wrote, “WRITING: Prince Harry reveals in autobiography that he credits US rapper Ice Spice for encouraging him during rocky split with his family.” Referring to the Bronx rapper’s lyrics and impersonating Duke, Mclaurin tweeted: “When he said ‘you did me dirty but what am I gonna do?’ it resonated.”
There are probably two camps here: sheer disbelief watching this train wreck, and general indifference to the affairs of yet another white family deeply entangled in a racist, colonial institution. Simply put, Phifer said she’s just tired of the royal family drama.
“I have real criticisms of the institution, but I just find it boring. More interesting things are coming with this memoir. This is basically just a family drama, just in the context of this institution,” Phifer said. “But still, I think [Harry] you should just get a therapist because people try to give this more than anything else. At the end of the day, he even said in a recent interview that he still cares about the monarchy. They are not these radicals… I just like to mock.
In the evergreen words of New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg: “We should all know less about each other.” Regardless, “Spare” is the gift that keeps on giving, thanks to Black Twitter’s ability to bring levity to any situation.
