Fast Travel Games Announce Ghost Signal: A Stellaris Game

Fast Travel Games today announced its next first-party title called Ghost Signal: A Stellaris Game. Quest 2 is coming in early 2023 and we already have some hands-on impressions for you.

Developed in-house by Fast Travel Games, Ghost Signal is a roguelite action game set in the Stellaris universe by Paradox Interactive. In Ghost Signal you control a ship through space with gameplay of combat, storytelling, resource gathering and more. Ghost Signal is designed as a seated experience and the story mode plays out in roguelite runs, with each level of the run presented as a unique and randomized diorama-like environment in front of you. Each setting puts your ship in the midst of stunning outer space vistas, but the content varies significantly. Some are face-to-face combat encounters, while others allow you to discover new items and upgrades, or converse with aliens through dialogue options.

You’ll play through multiple runs, each time encountering different procedurally generated environments, enemies, and items that alter your ship’s abilities with random upgrades and items you’ll discover along the way.

When it comes to combat, you can switch between three different weapons to target enemies, but you’ll need to balance weapon choices with positioning. Some weapons are more useful up close, while others work best at a distance. Rockets, for example, can have a big impact on strong enemies at a distance, but have limited ammo per shot – you’ll need to use them wisely.

Between levels, depending on your playstyle, you can upgrade your ship and its weapons, or equip items that change weapon behavior. You’ll find different items in each run and play through a random mix of encounters. It’s these mechanics that make Ghost Signal an increasingly popular choice of roguelites on VR platforms, but it also has some distinct elements that make it unique. The seated approach, using diorama-like environments for example, sets it apart as a more soothing entry and less physical exertion than other roomscale roguelites like Ancient Dungeon or Until You Fall.

I played through a short run of Ghost Signal at Gamescom last month. It was a tempting glimpse of what Fast Travel Games has in store, but I’ll hold off on full judgment until I can play more. That being said, the environments were a highlight and the sci-fi visuals work well in diorama form. Likewise, the structure showed potential, but whether the game has legs will depend on how enjoyable it is over longer play sessions and multiple runs.

The control scheme also contradicted the presentation a bit – you control your ship remotely by holding down the trigger and moving your controller to direct a small rod in the direction you want the ship to go. It then follows the outlined path to completion, allowing you to quickly stack multiple paths in a row. It took some getting used to and I wondered why I couldn’t just directly interact with the environment by reaching into the diorama to select the area I wanted to fly to.

All in all, Ghost Signal shows potential. Using the existing Stellaris IP is an interesting decision, and the diorama setup is reminiscent of hit tabletop games like Demeo. It will be exciting to see if Ghost Signal finds an audience and fills a void in the VR roguelike genre when it releases for Quest 2 in early 2023.
