What you need to know
- Microsoft is working on updating more areas of the File Explorer app
- There are references on the updated home page and side experience
- This modern design update will integrate with File Explorer’s redesigned header UI
Microsoft seems to be working on a major design update for File Explorer in Windows 11, which will include a modern home and folder layout to match the redesigned header first introduced in Windows 11 last year.
The first code and references to the modern home page and sidebar experience are available in the latest Windows 11 preview builds. Currently, File Explorer in Windows 11 is a combination of old and new interfaces, with the top part of the application featuring a modern design, and the “main” part of the application with a legacy design. .
These new modern elements are expected to complete File Explorer with a completely modern design based on XAML and WinUI. FireCubeStudios on Twitter have put together rough mockups of what the UI might look like based on the references and code found in the final preview build.

The screenshot confirms that this work will bring the rest of the File Explorer interface in line with the other modern interfaces found in Windows 11, which will go a long way in making Windows 11 feel more consistent and a great goal to of Windows 11 radio. publishing.
The code reference also points to new features and areas within File Explorer, including “Activities”, “Conversations”, “Shared Status”, and “Insights” which may be included in the Microsoft 365 and provides file updates such as Word Share. document.
I’ve also heard from my sources that this new modern design for File Explorer will also be friendlier, with a bigger hitbox and a simpler UI for areas like the sidebar and header.
At this time, it is not clear when these updated File Explorer designs will make their way to Insiders for testing. If the original references of Windows 11 Dev build have already appeared, it should be expected that this new thing will appear before the end of the year.
