Washington, DC – February 1, 2023 – Every American deserves access to affordable, high-quality health coverage that protects their health and financial stability. Health insurance providers are now taking important steps to ensure that every American signs up for the right coverage for themselves and their families.
Starting this month, states can begin the redetermination process for all Medicaid enrollees to verify they are still eligible for the program. A new analysis concluded that, as a result, 18 million people may lose access to Medicaid coverage.
A new AHIP resources check the Medicaid redetermination process and the importance of keeping Americans covered – whether they are still eligible for Medicaid, or need support to make a smooth transition to different sources of coverage.
“Every American deserves health insurance, which is essential to protecting their health and financial stability,” said Matt Eyles, President and CEO of AHIP. “Health insurance providers are committed to working with state leaders, federal officials, and other stakeholders and organizations in our health care system. We want to maximize the number of people covered and minimize coverage gaps by ensuring that individuals and families have clear information and, where appropriate , a smooth transition to alternative forms of coverage.
The stakes are high for local communities:
- Americans who are still eligible for Medicaid coverage may be deemed ineligible because their eligibility redetermination attempts were unsuccessful, causing them to lose eligible coverage due to administrative or paperwork issues.
- Americans who are determined to be ineligible for Medicaid may be uninsured because they cannot find other sources of coverage — placing a greater burden on local hospitals, health systems, employers, and taxpayers.
- Providers who treat Americans with Medicaid coverage may not have a source of reimbursement.
- The affordability of other types of coverage may be affected by changes in cost.
