We have a position to fill as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Sustainable IT-systems by design at the Department of Computer Science.
NTNU IE Faculty has taken the initiative to create a Center for Sustainable ICT CESICT – NTNU. It will encourage interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral approaches to ensure that the development and advancement of ICT solutions in support of sustainable development is done in a sustainable way. The center functions as an NTNU-coordinated network of activities for research institutions, industry and the public sector and is hosted by NTNU’s IE Faculty.
The postdoc scholarship is a temporary position with the primary goal of qualifying for a position in a leading academic position. The candidate will work closely with CESICT and contribute to its operation.

duties of the position
One of the core competency areas of professionals involved in the development of IT is the identification and presentation of system design requirements to ensure life cycle support of ICT systems. For modern ICT solutions, sustainability can be seen as a key concern, which requires an understanding of the life cycle of the ICT system, the context in which it can be used and its potential impacts. So we need to think about how to achieve sustainability through design, not as an afterthought. The agency conducts research on:
- How to formulate sustainability requirements for software and information systems.
- How to raise sustainability requirements for software and information systems.
- How to reconcile sustainability requirements and more traditional requirements and how to manage the dilemmas between technical, social, environmental, economic and personal sustainability.
- Dealing with sustainability requirements in modern agile development methods.
- How to assess compliance and fulfillment of sustainability requirements over a short and long term.
The person employed in the position is expected to:
- Publish in international conferences and journals in the relevant fields.
- Communicate and disseminate results to academic and non-academic stakeholders.
- Assistance in teaching, study and training activities.
- Leading/supporting NTNU research proposals in the field of sustainable ICT.
Required Selection Criteria
The main goal of the postdoc is to improve and further develop the research skills acquired during the PhD.
Completion of a Norwegian PhD in Information Systems, Software Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, CSCW or a related field, or an equivalent foreign PhD recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD is required.
Other qualifications we seek for this position are the following:
Mandatory/core requirement:
- A good, documented understanding of the relevant research areas, including information systems and software engineering.
- Software and information systems engineering skills.
- Demonstrated ability in applying qualitative, quantitative or mixed research methods in real organizations.
- Proven research competence through good publication performance in the relevant areas.
- The ability and willingness to conduct research both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent written and spoken English skills.
The appointment is based on the conditions of employment for posts such as postdocs, doctoral students, research assistants and trainees.

- Knowledge and experience with sustainability issues are considered an advantage.

We offer
salary and conditions
As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you will normally be paid from NOK 563 500 gross per year before tax, depending on your qualifications and seniority. 2% is deducted from salary as a contribution to the Norwegian Civil Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years, of which one year is earmarked compulsory work.
The engagement is carried out in accordance with the applicable regulations for government employees and officials as well as the laws controlling the export of strategic goods, services and technology. Candidates found to be inconsistent with the criteria of the latter statute, after evaluation of the application and addendum, will be disqualified from employment at NTNU.
After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the work area.
It is a requirement that you are present and available for the facility on a daily basis.

- Theoretical and methodological knowledge of the research area.
- An outline of important research problems in the research area Sustainable ICT.
- A summary of the candidate’s role and involvement in previous projects relevant to the research areas.
