Measured by the number of students and teachers, the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is the largest Faculty of Science in Finland. Around 6,000 students complete a basic course. About 1,000 of them are postgraduates. There are about 500 international students and over 200 researchers and teachers from abroad.
The Faculty of Physics is a large and multidisciplinary faculty offering the most diverse university program in physical sciences in Finland. At the beginning of 2022, the department employed around 200 people, including 2 academy professors, 23 professors and 5 associate professors or assistant professors. The research at the department and the research-based teaching follow a high international standard, are of national importance and promote the intellectual and economic well-being of society.
The Faculty of Physics at the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is now looking for a
to the Planetary Science Research Group beginning February 2023 for a fixed-term contract of three (3) years. The postdoc is working on a research project entitled asteroids at depth: Characterization of the subsoil of the near-Earth asteroids Moon and Mercury by radar observations.
The postdoc will be involved in radar observation analysis and the development of numerical models to study radar scattering processes in planetary regoliths. The postdoc is also expected to participate in teaching and supervision tasks in the Department of Physics, with the possibility of enrolling in official pedagogical training programs. The officer must have a relevant Ph.D. Degree in planetary science, astronomy, geophysics or a related subject and have good communication skills in English. Prior knowledge of numerical modeling of electromagnetic scattering or related processes as well as programming skills with Python and/or Fortran are required. Experience in radar data analysis is desirable but not a requirement.
