The students who will join the program are Andrea Bruera, Berker Banar, Elisa Rauseo, Iacopo Ghinassi, Jiawen Huang, Magdalena Hübner and Peiling Yi.
Now entering its seventh year, the Turing Enrichment program is designed for graduate students to support and enhance their current research by accessing the facilities and opportunities available at the renowned Alan Turing Institute. Enrichment students can collaborate and network with their peers and leading experts, learn and apply new methods, develop research independence, explore ethical issues in their projects and join a vibrant community of British Library students and researchers. Enrichment students were eligible for a bursary top-up of up to £6,700 in London.
Past Queen Mary recipients have spoken about how the overall experience, as well as the training sessions and courses provided, benefited their research and that the Environment allowed students to benefit from collaboration and view their research from new perspectives and from different disciplines. Katriona Goldman, Bioinformatician at Queen Mary said: “This experience took my research in directions that would have seemed daunting when I started my PhD. Access to The Turing Way community gave me the confidence and ability to release my own open source software packages and pipelines and ensure they are fully accessible, transparent and reproducible.”
dr Queen Mary’s Emmanouil Benetos, Senior Lecturer in EECS, Turing Fellow and member of the Enrichment Scheme applicant’s review panel, said: “The greatest benefit of enrichment internships is the opportunity to work with students and researchers from the broader data science and AI community in the UK, beyond the student’s home institution. Access to Turing’s high-performance computing resources is an added benefit, especially for students working on computationally intensive research topics.”
Professor Greg Slabaugh, head of Turing University at Queen Mary and director of the Digital Environment Research Institute, said: “The enrichment program offers our doctoral students an excellent opportunity to place their research in a broader context while developing new skills to improve their research results. Students are also expanding their personal network through collaboration and Turing’s ability to bring AI research together nationally.”

We have selected candidates from a variety of AI-related disciplines who will seize the opportunity to enrich their own research through the Turing Network.
“Students in the program will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers and students from a variety of disciplines, including networking opportunities such as advocacy groups and data study groups, and mentoring programs, and we are very excited to see these students continue to develop their skills and contribute to Turing’s research portfolio.”
Joining this year’s cohort is Queen Mary’s Iacopo Ghinassi, a second-year PhD student working on the segmentation and commentary of television and radio programs. comment on his occasion said Iacopo: “I’ve already been able to network with some of the people from the Humanities and Data Sciences Special Interest Group at Turing, and this has led to direct collaborations that will likely increase as I work into Turing’s inspiring HQ.”
Also joining this year’s program is Elisa Rauseo, a cardiologist and PhD student in artificial intelligence and cardiovascular medicine at the William Harvey Research Institute in Queen Mary. Elisha said: “My involvement with the Turing community will broaden my perspective and inspire new research opportunities. My clinical background, in turn, can expand the skillset available at The Turing and bring a different perspective.”
