About the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences
The Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences is at the forefront of agricultural, food and veterinary education and research in Australia.
The faculty includes the Melbourne Veterinary School and the School of Agriculture and Food. The faculty operates from three locations: Parkville, Werribee and Dookie. In addition to education and research, the faculty operates a veterinary hospital in Werribee, a sprawling farm in Dookie, and an equine hospital in Shepparton.
About the role
The Research Fellow (Soil Faunal Ecology) will play a key role in the Soil Science Challenge Project (Soil fauna and their role in nutrient conversion of agricultural soils) and collaborate with other project researchers in this multidisciplinary project.
The position requires excellent research management and an interdisciplinary background in soil science, soil microbiome and soil ecology. The research associate will have excellent interpersonal skills to support collaboration across disciplines as well as with industry partners and external stakeholders. The Research Fellow will also play an active role in mentoring and developing the skills of PhD students.
This position will be primarily based at the University of Melbourne’s Parkville campus and may be required to visit other sites and campuses.
Working closely with the lead investigators of the Soil Science Challenges Project, this role will:
- Manage the daily schedule and reports of the project
- Coordinate field operations and sampling of the project
- Conduct detailed studies on at least one group of bottom fauna
About you
You will have the opportunity to work with relevant academic and industry bodies and stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships. You have an excellent ability to work collaboratively and positively in a multidisciplinary, research-based team environment and to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. You have well-developed interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills with the ability to establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including industry partners and employees, in a diverse environment.
You will also have:
- Relevant doctorate or equivalent professional experience in a pedological, ecological, microbiological or agricultural research field
- Proven experience in leading research projects and coordinating research activities
- Demonstrated ability to conduct research under limited supervision and achieve research goals
- Proven knowledge and experience in soil/agricultural field work, such as conducting field trials and taking soil and crop samples
- Proven research aptitude to achieve milestones and provide research results in a timely manner
