Starlink broke top 100 most downloaded iPhone apps on Wednesday

As Starlink gains popularity for its high-speed internet services, its popularity on smartphones will also increase. According to SensorTower, an app tracking company, it’s on the right track. As of Wednesday, the Starlink app was the 54th most downloaded iPhone app for US users

The Starlink app, which is free to download, helps customers set up and use the hardware to get internet services. It also monitors the connection and speed. By the end of the day on Thursday, Starlink had dropped out of the top 100, landing at No. 107.

It wasn’t in the top 200 today, but it’s likely to change over time as SpaceX continues to expand the internet service. Wednesday’s ranking was a first for Starlink and Stephanie Chan, a SensorTower analyst said PCMag that she could only speculate as to why.

“As for why it entered the top 100 ranking on the iOS store yesterday, we can only speculate,” she said.

“It’s possible that because it’s been in the news lately (e.g. adding more satellites to its network, finding exceptions so they can serve Iran) Starlink helped raise awareness to sharpen or to strengthen curiosity about it.”

The tracking firm estimates that the total number of Starlink app installs on both the Apple App Store and Google Play has been around 2.3 million times worldwide as of January 2021. The top three countries using the space-based internet service are the United States, Ukraine and Canada.

Notably, Starlink has not been advertised on any network. Starlink isn’t the only product from a company founded by Elon Musk that doesn’t require advertising, nor is it the first.

“Its largest markets by installs are the US with about 887,000 installs, or about 38% of total downloads, followed by Ukraine with 806,000 installs (35% of lifetime downloads), and Canada with 209,000 installs (9%),” said Chan.

SensorTower noted that the app saw the most downloads in March after SpaceX began shipping dishes to Ukraine, where there are over 12,000 Starlink dishes.

Elon Musk announced earlier today that he is activating Starlink in response to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s tweet announcing the granting of a general license to provide the Iranian people with access to digital communications. He also said last week that Starlink is for peaceful use only.
