Thailand calls for faith in the multilateral system

At the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Thailand will call for confidence in the multilateral system as the center of the global development agenda, according to the Foreign Ministry spokesman.

Tanee Sangrat said Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai will lead the Thai delegation to attend the ongoing United Nations General Assembly in New York. Don is scheduled to address the gathering on the morning of September 24thth.

Thailand believes that the multilateral system has an important role to play in addressing new challenges such as digital technology, exploiting space and advocating a fair global financial system, he said, adding that this appeal was included in Don’s speech to the General Assembly of the… United Nations.

This year’s UNGA theme is “A Turning Point: Transformative Solutions to the Interlocking Challenges,” set by UNGA President Csaba Kőrösi of Hungary. It reflects the general sentiment among UN members about the current global situation.

As this will be the first face-to-face meeting in three years, it offers Thailand a good opportunity to reconnect with its counterparts from 193 member countries.

As the current chairman of APEC, Thailand hopes to reshape the global agenda and raise its profile by participating in international dialogues. Since 2016, Thailand has also acted as a coordinator for ASEAN and the UN on sustainable development issues.

Additionally, Don will take the opportunity to revitalize relationships between the Thai public and the Thai communities in the United States, as well as with US private sector organizations such as the US-ASEAN Business Council.

At the United Nations, Thailand will also submit its candidacy for the Human Rights Council for 2025-2027.

In addition to UN General Assembly activities, Don will conduct more than 10 side events, including bilateral meetings with China, the United Arab Emirates and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Thailand and the UN mark the 75th anniversary of their relationship.

Some of the other side events include co-hosting international public health conferences where Thailand has a positive track record. There will also be a meeting of the so-called groups of friends to encourage investment in the public health system.
