The Halloween season in Los Angeles is in full swing.

This week in LA, September 26-30 is the opening of Haunt O’ Ween, Urban Death, and Nights of the Jack, plus many free quests including KCRW Summer Nights in Little Tokyo, Astronomy on Tap in Pasadena, and a special showing of prey as part of the LA Times Food Bowl. Things to do this week

Astronomy on tap -> A Monday, Astronomy on Tap brings an evening of astronomy-themed pub trivia, live music, science talks and telescope viewings to the Dog Haus Biergarten in Old Pasadena. This month’s theme is “The Quest for Life and Planets”. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. Participation free of charge, no registration required. More info here.

Kristina Wong at Oxy Arts -> Artist/comedian/writer Kristina Wong joins Oxy Arts this Monday for a special spoken word performance/lecture presented in conjunction with OA’s latest exhibition. Voice a Wild Dream: Moments in Asian-American Art and Activism, 1968-2022. Participation is free and starts at 6:00 p.m. More information about Monday’s event can be found here.

How should we prepare for aliens? -> The public square Zócalo becomes interstellar Tuesday with a special in-person panel discussion that will address the social, scientific, and practical considerations humanity will face if/when we finally encounter intelligent life from outer space. Beyond Fest -> The Beyond Fest 10th Anniversary program includes 63 films shown at 5 Los Angeles locations: Aero Theatre, Los Feliz 3, TCL Chinese Theatre, Hollywood Legion Theater and IMAX Headquarters/Playa Vista. The action starts with that Tuesday with a free demonstration of to smile at the MUBI Theater at the Aero, and the festival runs through October 11. More info here.

Free prey screening -> As part of the LA Times Food Bowl, Hulu x bxp present a free community screening of prey This Wednesday at the Colorado Center in Santa Monica. Sign up and get more information here.

Total! standup comedy -> Total! brings a stand-up evening to the intimate space of Bar Lubitsch in Hollywood. This week’s lineup includes Greta Titelman (Search Party on HBO), Luke Mones (Laughing Devil Fest, Caroline’s Comedy Club), Ali Kolbert (Fallon), Eddie Della Siepe (Hulu, For Fact’s Sake Podcast), Jasmine Ellis (#1 iTunes Album). “Trashbaby”), Geoff Plitt (SF Sketchfest) and Alex Nussbaum (SiriusXM). KCRW Summer Nights -> KCRW Summer Nights concludes its 2022 series with a closing event in the courtyard of the Japan-American National Museum and MOCA Geffen. Expect a night of dancing, DJ sets, and after-hours access to both museums. Join for free. It starts at 18 o’clock. More info here.

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride -> The signature Halloween experience at Griffith Park continues this FridaySunday. Visitors will experience a remastered version of Midnight Falls, a fictional horror town filled with roaming monsters, a cursed morgue and a macabre theater. Hayride only tickets start at $29.99 and GA tickets for all attractions start at $39.99. More information is available here.

Knott’s creepy farm -> continued Thursday Sunday, Knott’s Scary Farm is back with its signature assortment of haunted attractions, mazes and thousands of monsters ready to scare you and your crew to death. More info here.

Halloween Horror Nights -> Scary season continues at Universal Studios Thursday to Sunday. The fall horror takeover features the signature Terror Tram along with a litany of scare zones, live shows and eight different haunted houses, including a nightmare experience based on The Weeknd’s After hours video series. GA tickets start at $72, but VIP and Express packages can push the price well over $300 depending on the offer. Runs on select dates through October 31st. More information is available here.

Writers Bloc in Valais -> Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anthony Doerr is coming to The Wallis Thursday kicking off the fall series of Writers Bloc talks. Former LA Times book critic David Ulin will moderate the discussion. GA tickets start at $25 per person. More information is available here.

Latin nights on the runway -> All Friday In September, Runway Playa Vista hosts free salsa dance classes followed by live Latin music performances. Lessons start at 5:30 p.m. No registration required. More info here.

Redondo Movie Nights -> A Fridays Catch free movie screenings at Redondo Beach Pier through September 30th. This week they’re showing Disney/Pixar’s Soul. The event starts at 7 pm. More info here.

Free Friday screening at Ovation Hollywood -> Ovation Hollywood hosts a free movie screening on the last Friday of every month with a pre-movie DJ set and free popcorn. This week they will be screening Encanto. More information is available here.

Urban Death Tour of Terror -> Zombie Joe’s Underground Theater’s annual Urban Death tradition returns with a brand new series of terrifying scenes accompanied by walks through a spooky maze. Performances begin this Friday and continue on Fridays and Saturdays through October 29th with two bonus shows on Sunday October 30th and Halloween Monday October 31st. Advance tickets are $20 per person. More info here.

Haunt O’Ween -> Haunt O’Ween’s 200,000 square foot playground of Halloween-themed games, performances, rides and attractions is now back in Woodland Hills Friday, with the promotion continuing on select dates through October 31st. GA tickets are $36 to $44. More information is available here.

Night of Jack -> The annual 1-mile trail with Halloween lights and jack-o’-lanterns at King Gillette Ranch returns this Friday, and will continue on select dates through October 31. In addition to the typical walk, you’ll find live pumpkin carving demonstrations, face painting, a gift shop, and a “spookeasy” that sells drinks for adults. Admission is $29.99 to $44.99 depending on what day of the week you attend. More information is available here.

New cocktails & snacks in The Green Room -> The Green Room recently launched a range of new experimental cocktails and eye-catching bar bites at its Burbank Speakeasy. On the menu is “Pay Me A Compliment,” a sweet and salty cocktail made with butter-washed Jefferson Ocean bourbon, popcorn essence bitters, and 24-karat gold dust, topped with an oversized ball of popcorn held together with marshmallow and butter-infused bourbon becomes. The new menu features Filet Mignon Sammies, a Hot Seafood Tower and Mini Pizza Pockets. Also a nice one Alice in Wonderland-inspired dessert called “Down The Rabbit-Hole” is a sweet eye candy, served on a tray with ube crepe cake, white chocolate ube mousse, homemade pistachio gelato, and candied pistachios, all whimsically put together to celebrate the mysterious forest inside to resemble film.

Rayo from Mexico City shows up in LA -> Bar Rayo in Mexico City is popping up in two bars in LA this week, bringing their innovative creations to Bar Flores on Thursday, September 28th and Bar Death & Co on Friday, September 29th The owners Tito Perez, Alvaro Garcia and Victor Garibay will be shaking and stirring exclusive cocktails created just for the pop-ups.

$10 gin cocktails at Complice Bar this week -> This month, Complice Bar in Mar Vista is hosting a special extended Wednesday Happy Hour from 5pm to 7pm in partnership with Future Gin. Catch several $10 Future Gin cocktails on the menu.

looking ahead

The Tasting Kitchen and Biite will welcome Monte Xanic winery and their Artio restaurant in the Valle de Guadalupe on Sunday 2nd October and Monday 3rd October for two special dinners in the Baja region. Tasting Kitchen executive chef Travis Passerotti and guest chef Viko Morales will collaborate on a menu that includes Duck Carnitas Tostada with Mole Verde, Seasonal Seafood Fideo and a Flannery California Reserve Dry Aged Ribeye with umami butter. Reservations are available through Biite for $165 per person.

Heritage Fire by Cochon555 -> Cochon555’s Heritage Fire returns to Los Angeles on Sunday, October 2nd with an all-star lineup of local chefs and artisans gathering in one place to celebrate traditional farm animals and heirlooms. The all-inclusive event features unlimited dining, a variety of wines, cocktails, craft beers, and live entertainment. Happening at The Westin Bonaventure Hotel in DTLA. General admission is $99 and VIP is $150.
